The Other Realm series will surprise and intrigue you!
Heather G. Harris is a talented writer, with the ability to bring you quickly into her story. Some authors take their time setting the stage and engaging the reader, which is fine. But it’s such fun to jump right in and be immediately involved in the story!
Something else that Harris does particularly well is craft an unpredictable urban fantasy story. If you’ve read any of my other posts you’ll know that I only like happy endings. So, I’ll tell you right off that this series ends well. However, there are characters- even main ones- whose tale ends very differently than expected.
I was completely caught off guard several times and found myself rereading pages to make sure I understood what had happened. Most writers in this genre don’t hit you with major shocks or surprises but this series totally had me! It is engaging, intelligently written and the characters do and think things that are realistic to the story. This is a fun and adventurous series with plenty of twists to keep you engaged!
Meet Jinx
Jinx is a private investigator with a unique gift – she can detect lies just by being around them. It might sound handy, but it’s definitely not your average talent. You’d think this ability would make her job a breeze, but despite the strange skill, she still hasn’t been able to uncover the truth behind her parents’ murders.
But one day Jinx is introduced to the realm of the Other, an existence that lives alongside ours and explains why she has always felt a bit out of place. Jinx is pulled into this exciting and dangerous realm and begins to learn that everything and everyone is more than what they seem.
What I love about The Other Realm Series:
- The characters are just fascinating. If you read this genre often, you’ve likely stumbled upon most of the kinds of supernaturals. But Harris introduces some I’d never heard of before. She also does an excellent job of building the Other world and letting you feel part of the characters and their developing relationships. My very favorite part of this series has to be the unpredictability of some of the plot points. So fun!
What I didn’t love about it:
- Sometimes the British narrative was a little distracting. At the same time, if I limit myself to authors whose native language is American English, I’ll miss out on great stories and a more well-rounded way of looking at things. So yes, I did find it a bit distracting but I acknowledge that it’s likely my own personal learning curve!
Spice level:
- The spice level was pretty tame. You knew things were happening behind closed doors but it wasn’t descriptive.
Language:
- The language is not quite as tame as I prefer. This is likely because its writer, Heather G. Harris is from the UK and I recognize their wording is different from mine, being from the US. Knowing that many of these words might not be considered swearing in the UK let me enjoy it even more.
Violence:
- There is some violence but nothing that bothered me unduly. The violence that was depicted was important to the story and not too graphic.
Length:
- There are seven books in this series. The books are of medium length, between 300 and 350 pages.
