Legally Blonde meets urban fantasy!
The opening line written by the author to summarize this series is: “Legally blonde meets urban fantasy”. Oh. My. Gosh. There’s not a better way to describe it! I don’t know about you but most of the novels I read feature a strong heroine. And usually she’s tough, somewhat gritty (think Tomb Raider) and I feel like that’s the vibe a lot of these women give off.
This series was such fun precisely because Madeline is not that girl at all! She is so very girly without sacrificing intelligence or power. Madeline is the girl you want to go shopping with and by the end of the series as she hones her power, you also want her beside you in a dark alley!
The author, Shari L. Tapscott writes mostly high fantasy. In fact, I believe this is her first urban fantasy series. Perhaps because she has that writing background, this story feels particularly epic and spans more than just our world.
There is more than one love interest throughout the series and at different times I found myself cheering for different heroes. In the end it becomes very clear which man is the right match and it’s totally satisfying!
Madeline’s plans have changed…
At twenty-two, Madeline Bennet is confident her future is set. With her family’s powerful connections and a close relationship with the grand duke’s nephew, securing her dream apprenticeship with the Royal Guild seems like a sure thing.
But Madeline’s plans take an unexpected turn when she’s assigned to a team of knight marshals instead. Tasked with patrolling the U.S. to apprehend magical offenders, she’s thrown into a chaotic world of troll chases, deadly pixies, and a sinister web of criminal intrigue. As if navigating these dangers isn’t challenging enough, she must also contend with her reluctant teammates: Gray, Jonathan, and Eric—the knight marshals themselves.
They’re everything Madeline isn’t planning for—strong, highly skilled, infuriatingly attractive, and utterly uninterested in having her on their team.
For six months, the unlikely group must find a way to work together, but even surviving the first week proves daunting. Yet, unbeknownst to the knights, Madeline is hiding a secret—one darker and more perilous than she could have imagined, and it might just be the biggest threat they’ll face.
What I love about the Obsidian Queen series by Shari L. Tapscott:
This series blends the best of all worlds! There are handsome men, high-class women, evil societies and plenty of magic. Add in a prophesied other-realm ruler and a pair of stilettos and you have the Obsidian Queen series. Shari L. Tapscott is a terrific writer who keeps the story moving while really letting you get to know the characters. This series is a fun, fast paced read with plenty of romance and action.
What I didn’t love about it:
Honestly, this is one of my favorite series by a very talented writer. I can’t think of anything I didn’t enjoy.
Spice level:
This series is spicy-sweet. What I mean by that is that the characters have romantic integrity- there are relationships rather than strict attraction. There are some mildly steamy scenes but it’s not what I would consider explicit. If it’s much past kissing, it’s left to the imagination.
Language:
The language is mild. Throughout the whole series there are a few mild swear words and they are always appropriate to the scene.
Violence:
This series is mild to medium in terms of violence. It’s not completely tame but neither does it keep me up at night. About half of the violence involves fantasy creatures.
Length:
There are five books in this series. These novels are a shorter length, around 250 pages each. Perfect for any of you short-attention-span gals like myself!
Where to get the Obsidian Queen series by Shari L. Tapscott:
At the time I’m writing this review, the series is available on Kindle. The books can be bought on kindle or are free with your Kindle Unlimited subscription. The series is also available in paperback form and on audible.
A different kind of heroine who’s spicy sweet! Hope you love this series as much as I did. Keep reading! -Eva
