Lindsay Buroker does it again…
The Legacy of Magic series by Lindsay Buroker is one of my favorites! Buroker has a knack for writing off-center main characters that stay with you long after you close the book! This series features Matti, a half-Samoan, half-dwarven woman with an enchanted hammer. Add to that an OCD elf assassin and you’ve got yourself the makings of an unforgettable story!
I love all the quirky supporting characters. This series is set in the same world as Death by Dragons and Tracking Trouble and it’s such fun to run into characters from those series! Legacy of Magic takes place in our world- specifically the Seattle area, where the supernatural live among us, largely unseen. Throughout the series we travel to other realms, as all magical creatures have migrated to earth from their home worlds.
It’s particularly fun to watch Matti and Sarrlevi grow and develop as individuals and then to see how they unexpectedly compliment each other. What starts as an unlikely pairing becomes the only way you could imagine their being happy. There are complicated family and species dynamics as well as plots to change the very fabric of the world.
This is a fun and intriguing tale that doesn’t rush you to the happy end. I completely enjoyed getting to know Matti and Sarrlevi and hope you will too!
Matti’s steady life is turned upside down…
Matti Puletasi, a Seattle-based contractor with the strength of a bear, the stamina of an ox, and a magical dwarven hammer, is content with renovating homes and occasionally knocking out bad guys. But when she stumbles upon a powerful artifact hidden beneath a house, her world is turned upside down. Now, humans, orcs, and werewolves are all after it—and they’ll kill to claim it.
To make matters worse, someone frames her for murder. The only ally she has is Sarrlevi, a deadly and arrogant elven assassin with his own secret agenda. Trusting him could be dangerous. Falling for him? Even worse.
As Matti fights to clear her name, she’s forced to confront long-buried family secrets, including a vindictive dwarven aunt and the mysterious disappearance of her parents. But the deeper she digs, the more perilous things become. Powerful dragons lurk in the shadows, orchestrating a plot that could sever Earth from the Cosmic Realms and bring humanity to its knees.
Matti has faced impossible odds before, but when a dark-elven artifact curses her, stealing her magic, she’s in the fight of her life. If she can’t break the curse, she risks losing everything: her home, her family, and the elf she can no longer live without.

What I love about The Legacy of Magic series by Lindsay Buroker:
As are all of Lindsay Buroker’s series- this is well written, with unique characters, surprise twists and a great ending.
What I didn’t love about it:
Sometimes the story moves a little slowly.
Spice level:
This series is mild to medium in terms of spice. There are some scenes where Sarrlevi is coerced into physical relationships. There is also some mostly closed-door romance between the main characters. It’s never too graphic or offensive to me.
Language:
The language is fairly tame. There are some mild swear words throughout the series. The language is always appropriate to the character and scene.
Violence:
This series is mild to medium in violence. There is kidnapping, violence and death but it’s not usually overly graphic.
Length:
This series has 8 books. They are medium length, around 300 pages each.
