Thrill of the Hunt series includes the following books: Tattered Huntress, Fiendish Delights, Skullduggery, The Salted Sceptre
A Young Woman’s Journey of Transformation…
Right off the bat, I knew this series would be different from what I typically read. I want to start by saying that while the story is filled with magic and mayhem, it’s not a particularly light read. The opening scene involves the main character Daisy Carter, buying drugs to keep her powers under control. I’ll be honest, I kept expecting the drug addiction aspect of the story to fade away but it is actually integral to the character’s development and to the story itself. At the end of the series, it’s clear that Daisy will always battle addiction.
This definitely makes the character, and thus the story more real. For anyone who has loved an addict or battled addiction themselves- maintaining abstinence or sobriety is a lifelong goal. Helen Harper does a good job of weaving stark reality and urban fantasy together. In short, this is an engaging series and because of some of the darker themes, I would recommend it when you are wanting something a little more rooted in the painful truths of life.
Meet Daisy Carter: adopted low elf in a world where high elves rule
In the bustling streets of Edinburgh, a low elf with a knack for elvish magic is just trying to make ends meet as a humble delivery driver. Life isn’t glamorous, but it’s honest work—until everything changes with one fateful encounter.
Hugo Pemberville, a renowned high elf and celebrated treasure hunter, storms onto the scene, turning Daisy’s world upside down. While the public knows only the handsome and charming noble, Daisy meets a very different version of the illustrious high elf when his critical judgement costs her the job she desperately needs. Wallowing in self pity isn’t really Daisy’s style. Determined to seek justice, she decides to thwart the man who fancies himself above her and show Hugo that he isn’t the only one who can hunt treasure.
Daisy thus finds herself thrust into the high-stakes world of treasure hunting, racing both the clock and the other adventurers alongside the pompous Hugo. Here the low elf discovers a world far more perilous—and exhilarating—than imagined. Facing treacherous obstacles and high-stakes challenges, survival will require courage, wit, and a dose of luck.
Against all odds, this underdog is determined to prove that even a low elf can rise to great heights.
What I love about the Thrill of the Hunt series:
I think what I loved most about this series is that Helen Harper is just an excellent writer. The characters are realistic, witty and engaging. You can’t help rooting for the disadvantaged Daisy and cheering for her as she overcomes. There are definitely some twists and turns I didn’t see coming- which keep you interested and wondering what will come next. I also like the romance, which builds slowly and feels believable.
Spice level:
This is definitely an enemies to lovers romance. The spice level is relatively tame and while they are eventually in bed together, it doesn’t get overly explicit.
Language:
The language is rather strong. There is mild cursing throughout with a handful of F-bombs as well. This writer is Scottish and it’s my understanding that our American swear words are considered milder in the UK.
Violence:
Violence in this book series is mild to moderate but I’m pretty wimpy in this category!
Length:
These books are on the shorter side for novels- just over 250 pages each. Perfect for those with short attention spans like myself!
