Light urban fantasy with an emphasis on romance…
I’ll start by saying I haven’t read all sixteen books in this series. However, I’ve read enough to understand the format. These books all feature supernatural couples and take place in Nocturne Falls, a town of shifters, vampires, witches, fae, etc. I would say these stories are romance first and adventure second. I tend to prefer a bit more action and adventure with romance as a secondary element. While there are many aspects to love about this series, I did find that these books struggled to keep my attention. That being said, they are perfect for when you want a lighthearted urban fantasy with a lot of romance, passion and some spice.
Kristen Painter is a good writer who has developed a solid formula for writing feel-good supernatural romance. Her characters are interesting and I love the happy endings! I also love that while each book is an independent story, characters from former books pop up in later ones. Such fun!
Sixteen stories of love and longing…
With sixteen separate stories to tell, this post would be pages long! Here’s a summary of book one to give an idea of how these stories progress…
Welcome to Nocturne Falls—a town where Halloween isn’t just a holiday, it’s a way of life. Tourists flock here, dazzled by the vampires, werewolves, and witches roaming the streets, believing it’s all part of the show. But for the supernatural residents? It’s just home.
On the run after witnessing her maybe-mobster boss commit murder, Delaney James assumes a new identity, desperate to disappear. Her brilliant plan? Posing as a mail-order bride. But she never expected her new “fiancé” to live in a town where strange feels suspiciously normal. Or that he’d be a 400-year-old vampire.
Hugh Ellingham only agreed to the matchmaking scheme to appease his meddling grandmother—planning to send his so-called bride packing after 30 days. Love isn’t in the cards, not for someone with his dangerous past. But Delaney is nothing like he expected, and resisting her proves impossible.
With secrets between them and danger lurking in the shadows, will their love story end before it even begins? Or will Nocturne Falls work its magic and bring them together—fangs, fur, and all?

What I love about the Nocturne Falls series by Kristen Painter:
I love that the books are all connected without being dependent on each other. I also love that these books are reliably similar and have happy and satisfying endings.
What I didn’t love about it:
Because the books are somewhat predictable and heavy on romance, I struggled to stay interested.
Spice level:
This series is medium in terms of spice. The couples are all physically involved by the end of the book. I wouldn’t say these books are explicit (although I haven’t read all of them so I might be wrong) but mostly they just get a little steamy without too much description.
Language:
This series has occasional, mild swear words. They always fit the scene and character.
Violence:
This series is mild to medium in terms of violence. There is action and suspense as well as danger and people being held against their will. I never thought it was over the top at all.
Length:
This series has a whopping 16 books! They are between 300 and 400 pages each.
