Montrose Paranormal Academy series by Barbara Hartzler

When prophecies come to life, all hell breaks loose! A review of the Montrose Paranormal Academy series by Barbara Hartzler

Montrose Paranormal Academy by Barbara Hartzler includes the following books: The Nexis Secret, Crossing Nexis, The European Conspiracy, The Seer’s Army, The Last Ruby, The Secondborn Seer

Lucy is the prophesied seer…

If high school isn’t challenging enough, Lucy learns within the first few chapters of book one that she’s the prophesied seer the world has waited for. It seems every generation has one and as a sixteen year old, she’s just now finding out it’s her!

This is the first series by Barbara Hartzler that I’ve read. She has several other series that take place in the same universe, after this series. I find that authors tend to improve with time and I’m hopeful that Barbara is no exception. The story is truly fascinating and there were plot twists that left me shocked. There is also a love story but you really don’t know who Lucy will end up with until a couple of books in. I love when authors are able to surprise their readers!

However, the writing is rather choppy. Several times I had to reread passages to try and follow what was being said. It’s still a terrific story and I would definitely recommend giving it a read, just know that you may be employing some patience.

My very favorite aspect of this series is that it pulls prophecies from bible passages. I actually pulled out my bible to see if they were accurate and they were! There’s something about reading words from thousands of years ago and seeing them unfold in a modern story filled with intrigue, love and magic!  Barbara Hartzler did this in a more impressive way than any author I’ve read. For that reason alone, this series is worth your time!

Survival means secrets…

At Montrose Paranormal Academy, the Three Societies rule—and they don’t take kindly to secrets.

Lucy has never considered herself extraordinary, but everything changes when she discovers a shocking truth: she can see angels and demons. Three years ago, her brother mysteriously vanished in Europe, leaving behind only a cryptic postcard. Now, she must navigate the treacherous world of the academy, staying under the radar long enough to uncover the truth about his disappearance.

To survive, Lucy must keep crucial secrets about who she is and what she can do. No one can see the postcard her brother sent. No one can know about her supernatural sight. And no one can know her powers are manifesting earlier than expected.

But when two society elites take an interest in her, keeping her secrets becomes nearly impossible. The disciplined and honorable captain of the Guardians intrigues her, yet his rigid loyalty to the rules makes him an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, the charismatic and reckless president of the Nexis Society seems to know far too much about her past—and he might be the only one who can help her.

As Lucy struggles to control her newfound abilities, she begins to suspect she is more than just another student—she may be the Seer all three societies desperately seek. But is she a prize to be won or a weapon to be used?

To find her brother and master her powers, Lucy must tread carefully. Because in this academy, secrets are power—and hers might just get her killed.

Montrose Paranormal Academy series by Barbara Hartzler

What I love about  the Montrose Paranormal Academy series by Barbara Hartzler:

This author does an incredible job of weaving history and fantasy together. I also love that you don’t immediately know which love interest Lucy will end up with. It’s also really fun to watch Lucy and her friends grow in confidence and power.

What I didn’t love about it:

Sometimes the writing is a bit choppy. This is pretty common when authors are getting started and this is Barbara Hartzler’s first series.

Spice level:

This series is mild in terms of spice. There’s plenty of romance but it’s very sweet, not graphic at all.

Language:

I would have to reread to be sure but I don’t believe there are any swear words in this series.

Violence:

This series is medium in terms of violence. There is action and suspense as well as danger. This story has teenagers confronting well-trained and sometimes evil adults and there is violence against them. It’s not over the top in my opinion but can sometimes be intense.

Length:

This series has five books plus a novella. They are short to medium length, around 300 pages. The novella is 99 pages.
