The McKenzie Green series includes the following books: Green Gryphon, Green Mage, Green Shadow, Green Vampire
McKenzie Green is on the run…
Enter a dystopian world where humanity is struggling to rebuild itself after The Resurgence- an event that killed billions and brought out latent magical abilities in some. Here we meet McKenzie Green, a hunter with the prestigious Catch and Release guild and leader of her found family.
The opening scene of this series lands us with McKenzie, on a rooftop looking down at a vampiric crime scene. J.S. Kennedy wastes no time putting the reader in the middle of the action and the series doesn’t slow down much from there.
The story takes place in a very harsh world. It matches the experiences of our heroine, who has been to hell and back since her earliest childhood. Some of the scenes are hard to read, especially as brutality against children occurs. As the books progress we learn about her traumatic past, why she has the power she does and who will stop at nothing to get her back. Pair that with a gorgeous and overpowered dragon shifter and you have the makings of a great adventure.
This is a very well written series. The plot is interesting and dynamic and the characters are multi-dimensional. Honestly, J.S. Kennedy is just a darn good writer. I read mostly Kindle Unlimited novels which is a great platform for authors of all skill levels. This means that oftentimes you come across those who are just starting out and still honing their proficiency. J.S. Kennedy is clearly a writer. Her work is clean and concise, not riddled with errors or redundancies. Even if you don’t care for the story, you will appreciate the work of a good author.
McKenzie and Lucan: a match made for post-apocalyptic survival!
When the Dragon Protector comes calling, Mackenzie knows trouble is about to take flight.
As a proud bounty hunter for Catch and Release, Mackenzie thrives on chaos. Her usual targets? Rogue vampires, feral shifters, and out-of-control mages—the kind of nightmares that keep most people up at night. But nothing could prepare her for Lucan—a maddeningly arrogant, high-ranking dragon shifter, showing up with an unexpected request: find a missing child from his Tribe.
Kidnapping isn’t her specialty, but letting an innocent kid suffer? Not a chance. Even if it means working with Lucan and his oversized ego.
But as Mackenzie dives headfirst into the search, she finds herself tangled in a web of dangerous secrets. The deeper she digs, the more questions arise—about the child, the mysterious kidnapper, and even Lucan himself.
What I love about the McKenzie Green series:
The characters are well thought-out and interesting. The plot flows well and answers the reader’s questions and I love the slow-burn romance between Lucan and McKenzie. The dystopian world is also presented in an easy and natural way and J.S. Kennedy is just an excellent writer.
What I didn’t love about it:
This story was over the top for me in terms of trauma and violence. There were scenes I skimmed rather than read because they were upsetting. Again- the writing is excellent but the story is rough on the sensitive reader. I particularly struggle with torture and brutality to children so this series was hard to get through.
Spice level:
The spice level was tame- nothing explicit. The love story is sweet and I like the way it develops naturally.
Language:
The language is mild. There is some swearing throughout but nothing over the top.
Violence:
The violence and brutality in this series is too intense for me. If you’ve read any of my other reviews you might know that I have a low tolerance so others might find the violence level entirely acceptable.
Length:
There are four books in this series. These novels are medium length, between 300 and 400 pages each. The last book in the series is currently being written.
Where to get the McKenzie Green series by J.S. Kennedy:
At the time I’m writing this review, the series is available on Kindle. The books can be bought on kindle or are free on Kindle Unlimited. The series is also available in paperback form and on Audible.
I hope you enjoy this well-written and gripping series! Keep reading! -Eva
