Supernaturals have problems too!

I completely enjoyed Magic on Main Street by K.M. Shea! If you follow this author you might know that this is the last series she’s written, and as she’s taken a writing sabbatical- it may be the last one she ever writes. This is both heartbreaking for her fans and helps me really savor her books!

This series takes place in the city of Magiford, a Wisconsin-ish city that is home to humans and supernaturals. Unlike many urban fantasies, the humans are aware of the supernaturals and even somewhat in awe of them!

The reigning body of government for the magical has put together a task force to handle magical problems before they come to the attention of the human police. Recently added to the force is Jade, a vampire slayer who has been trained to be lethal. To make her character even more fun, she is socially anxious and oftentimes comes across the wrong way when she tries too hard or misunderstands a social cue.

She’s fiercely loyal to her squad, relentlessly professional and downright deadly. I love how she is such a bad-A one moment (in battle) and adorably confused the next (in conversation). She’s a fascinating and complex character and I really enjoyed her story.

I also love Connor, her vampire neighbor. He’s ancient and exhausted from living too long. I love how determined he is to keep Jade in his life when he realizes that with her, he does more than exist- he enjoys life! Their relationship is sweet and complicated and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Jade wants to build, not destroy…

For years, Jade has trained in the family business of slaying vampires, but the constant cycle of death has left her weary. Determined to prove that slayers can do more than just destroy, she sets out to make a difference by joining the Magiford supernatural task force—a group dedicated to protecting both humans and supernaturals from dangerous magic.

But fitting in isn’t easy. Her new teammates on the night shift regard her with fear, knowing that slayers are the ruthless assassins of the supernatural world. And blending in with humans during the day proves just as challenging. Despite her best efforts, her neighbors remain wary, unimpressed by her social skills—which are awkward at best.

Everything changes when a charming vampire named Connor moves in next door. Unlike the others, he isn’t afraid of her. Though he refuses to try her disastrous baking experiments, he becomes the first real friend she’s made—one who shares her unusual schedule and doesn’t shy away from her quirks.

And Jade finds that her anxiety and tongue-tied conversations don’t show up when she’s with Connor. As the most unlikely pair, the slayer and vampire form a comfortable friendship.

Just as she starts to believe she might finally belong, an immensely powerful and dangerous vampire claims downtown as his personal hunting ground. He’s stronger than anyone on her squad, and worse, he seems to relish their encounters, toying with her in battle. Since Jade is the only one who can stand against him, she’s forced into a deadly game—one that threatens not just her mission to gain acceptance, but her team’s very survival.

As time goes on, Connor and Jade discover that their friendship might be more than friendly. As an immortal vampire exhausted from life and a socially anxious slayer trying to engage in it, can the unlikely pair find refuge in each other? And can Jade keep her squad and city safe from this new and deadly foe?
