Magic Bullet series by Annabel Chase

Master your exile in 3 easy steps! A review of the Magic Bullet series by Annabel Chase

The Magic Bullet series includes the following books: Burned, Death Match, Demon Hunt, Soulfire

Alyse the djinn has been burned…

This electric series jumps right into the story of Alyse, the fearsome djinn who has just been “burned” or disavowed by her agency, The Shadow Elite. She quickly finds herself navigating the mystery of who burned her and why back in her home town and without any of her powers.

This is one of my favorite series by one of my favorite authors. Annabel Chase has a knack for writing interesting characters in a believable way. She develops her plots quickly and yet thoroughly so that you can hardly wait to get to the next page. I love the main character Alyse, who is forced to confront her own weaknesses and some of the hard truths she’s avoided by joining the elite agency and basically ghosting the friends of her youth. Along the way we meet her best friend Farrah, the djinn fox shifter, Pinky, the overpowered teenage mage and Captain Reed, the serious and sexy Naphil.

This series takes place in our current world but with a twist, in which normal humans live alongside supernaturals without knowing it. There are some darker themes like djinn trafficking, crime syndicates and a best friend running an adult entertainment store. But the story is told in such an engaging way that those themes don’t keep me up at night the way they would if written in a different way.

Can Alyse survive a life without powers?

Alyse Winters, a former supernatural covert agent, is forced into hiding as she investigates the mystery behind her muzzled magic and the truth about her handler’s untimely demise. The challenges she faces are far from simple, even for someone with her skills. From the strange behavior of Ghuls- to devastating revelations about those she once trusted, Alyse’s journey is fraught with danger and intrigue.

Her resolve is tested when her young mage sidekick is chosen to compete in the perilous Colony Games. Determined to protect her charge, Alyse risks exposure and death, only to uncover a far greater conspiracy. As the games progress, it becomes clear that the stakes are much higher than she ever imagined.

To complicate matters, humans inexplicably begin committing crimes under what seems to be a spell, and a figure from Alyse’s past resurfaces, blurring the line between ally and adversary. When a PAN asset is found dead on her doorstep, Alyse is drawn into a web of events that shake her understanding of both the past and the future.

Sexy ex-boyfriends, grumpy half angels and a best friend addicted to the wrong kind of guy keep life as a civilian interesting. This gripping tale of magic, mystery, and survival keeps readers on edge, showcasing Alyse’s determination and resilience as she battles adversaries both old and new.

Magic Bullet Series by Annabel Chase

What I love about the Magic Bullet series by Annabel Chase:

This story is very well written. The characters are multidimensional and interesting and there’s plenty of action and romance. (Who doesn’t love that?!) I love that the story is set in our modern world- it lets me believe there is magic all around that I don’t know about. I also love that the heroine- who is used to being the scariest person in the room- has had her powers stripped. You spend the whole book excited to see what she can do if she gets them back!

What I didn’t love about it:

This series is on the edge of what I can handle as far as intensity goes. Because of some of the darker themes, this series can be a bit much. When reading this series, I needed to have just finished something very light.

Spice level:

As far as sexy scenes go- this series has nothing objectionable. You are aware of intimacy between some of the characters but there is no detail. However, the best friend runs an adult entertainment store and has a loose idea of commitment.

Language:

There is some mild and infrequent swearing throughout the series. It is always appropriate to the scene.

Violence:

There is quite a bit of violence in this series. I would say it’s on the edge of what I can handle- although if you’ve read my other reviews you will know I have a low tolerance in this category. This series is perfect if you have a higher tolerance for violence or are ready for a story with some grit.

Length:

There are four books in this series. These novels are on the shorter side, between 250 and 300 pages each.
