The Hall of Blood and Mercy series by K.M. Shea includes the following books: Magic Forged, Magic Redeemed, Magic Unleashed
Clean urban fantasy at it’s finest!
I’m going to be honest- the Hall of Blood and Mercy series is one of my very favorite series written by one of my very favorite authors. At this point I’ve read every book K.M. Shea has written, including those that are more high fantasy and less urban fantasy. I’ve watched some her writing evolve, getting clearer, more concise and just plain better. If I could recommend only one writer in this genre, it would be her!
This story is a sweet, exciting and clean mix of romance, present-day fantasy and adventure! I love feeling part of the story as Hazel and Kilian do battle for the sake of their families and find themselves falling in love. It’s complete story-telling fun!
Hazel Medias is a scrappy, underpowered wizard who has spent her life dealing with bullies and struggling to survive. After the sudden death of her parents, she inherits responsibility for her wizard house, but things quickly spiral out of control when a treacherous cousin stages a coup and takes the family hostage. Forced to flee, Hazel’s only hope lies in refuge with the Drake Family, led by Killian Drake, a fearsome vampire who is as dangerous as he is calculating.
Kilian sees potential in Hazel’s magic and trains her to better fortify his family. What begins as his pet project yields surprising results which might just steal a vampire’s heart. And with his help, she might build enough strength to rescue her family and reclaim her house. As they train together, a slow-burn romance develops, full of humor, adventure, and tension, with the protagonist learning to harness their magic under the guidance of the deadliest vampire around.
Set in the Magiford Supernatural City, a world filled with vampires, wizards, fae and werewolves, this series is a fast-paced, binge-worthy read, combining humor, high stakes, and a unique pairing of a small but scrappy wizard and the most lethal vampire in town.
What I love about the Hall of Blood and Mercy series:
- The characters are funny and believable. The story is quick and easy to read, enough explanation of the surroundings to be fun but not so wordy that it’s distracting. The reader is taken on a journey through the ups and downs of Hazel’s mission to reclaim her wizarding house. We get to experience Hazel and Kilian’s growth and natural evolution as they are required to change in order to succeed. Again, I just love the believable way the characters interact and grow!
What I didn’t love about it:
- There’s really nothing to say here! This is one of my favorite authors and favorite series for a reason!
Hall of Blood and Mercy spice level:
- This is definitely a love story between Hazel Medias and Kilian Drake but I would put this at a very clean spice level of two, with ten being Fifty Shade of Grey and one being Jane Austen.
Language:
- In the whole series there might be a couple of mild swear words and they are appropriate to the scene.
Fantasy Violence Level:
- There is definitely some violence but it’s appropriate to the story and tastefully done. There is nothing gory or overly descriptive. In short, no nightmares after I read it and I’m definitely a wimp in this category!
Length:
- There are three books that make up this series, and each one is just under 300 pages. In my opinion this is about the perfect length- not too long that you lose interest but long enough to keep you invested!
Where to get K.M. Shea’s Hall of Blood and Mercy series:
- At the time I’m writing this review, the whole series is available on Kindle Unlimited, also on Amazon kindle. If you prefer to listen it’s also on Audible.
I hope this series provides the perfect escape for you, as it has for me. Keep reading!- Eva
