Good Bad Witch by Isa Medina

6 steps to a dazzling witch career! A review of the Good Bad Magic series by Isa Medina

The Good Bad Magic series by Isa Medina includes the following books: Good Bad Witch, Right Wrong Shifter, Fresh Old Bounties, Real Fake Hauntings, Bright Dark Curses, Upside Down Magic

Hope and Ian prove that opposites attract…

The dialogue is fun and snarky and I love her many positive affirmations. When things go awry- as they often do for Hope- she’s ready with a deep breath and an uplifting statement like “be the witch you want to be.”

I also really like Hope’s love interest, the grouchy Ian. One thing that I see done way too often in books is to make the hero too perfect and unbelievable. He can’t be gorgeous and considerate and rich and powerful and humble all at one. Such people don’t exist.

Ian is good looking and powerful but he’s also condescending and behaves like a jerk and has done some rather shady things. He’s got a complicated family situation and is basically a shifter without a pack- which only makes him more grumpy and closed off. This is a person we can believe is real.

And it makes sense that when opposites attract, Hope and Ian would be drawn to each other. She has just enough optimism and determination to draw him out of his self-imposed isolation and she needs the strength and stability he provides.

This is an entertaining series with several twists I never saw coming. I love the romance, the magic and the way the characters grow and evolve.

Hope is trying to be a good witch…

Being a good witch is tough—especially when customers keep asking for bad magic.

For one determined witch, fulfilling her late grandmother’s dream of running a witch shop is everything. So, when the chance arises, she packs up and moves across the country without hesitation. But she quickly learns that running a shop isn’t all charm and potions—especially when someone is actively trying to sabotage her.

The local bounty hunter shifter doesn’t trust her, customers won’t stop demanding forbidden magic, and to top it all off, a dead body turns up in her bathtub. Even worse, an anonymous caller is desperate to buy her grandmother’s spellbook, a request she refuses outright. But whoever is after it isn’t taking no for an answer.

With a town full of suspicious newcomers and a growing sense that someone believes her spellbook holds dangerous secrets, she finds herself tangled in a mystery with no shortage of suspects.

Despite it all, life in Olmeda isn’t all bad—she has her own shop, a growing attraction to Ian the overpowered shifter and her favorite book is even being turned into a movie in town. But Olmeda has its own dark history, and as production begins, an old city curse awakens: anyone filming here is doomed to regret it.

When magical mishaps plague the set, she and her ragtag group of allies are asked to investigate. With suspects piling up, a shifter injured, and time running out, the stakes have never been higher. As if that weren’t enough, a cold and calculating undercover Witch Council agent arrives at her shop, armed with a potion test that could determine its fate.

If she fails, she loses her dream. If she doesn’t stop the saboteur, the attacks will only get worse. And if Ian doesn’t return soon, she just might perish from longing.

Olmeda may be cursed, but at this point, she’s starting to think she might be too.

Good Bad Magic by Isa Medina

What I love about the Good Bad Magic series by Isa Medina:

I really love the whole premise of these books. Even the title- Good Bad Magic- tells us that nothing is as black and white as it seems. Good people make poor choices. Bad magic can be done for the right reasons. I love the cute way Isa Medina makes this point. The writing is fun and easy to read- I especially love the dialogue and hearing Hope talk to herself! I love the romance and all the secondary characters as well!

What I didn’t love about it:

Sometimes the plot seemed a little slow.

Spice level:

This series is mild in terms of spice. Anything beyond kissing is left to the imagination.

Language:

There are a couple of mild swear words. They are appropriate to the scenes and characters and there are no F-bombs

Violence:

This story has plenty of action but very little of what I would call violence. It reads more like a cozy mystery.

Length:

This series has six books. They are all on the shorter side, around 250-300 pages.
