Fred the Vampire Accountant is a fellow I’d like to meet!

Fred the Vampire Accountant has been an unexpected and delightful series! I don’t often read the work of male authors. First off, there seems to be ten times the female writers in the genre of books I enjoy. Secondly, I often relate a little less with the way male authors write. So finding this gem of an author has been so fun!

This is my second series by Drew Hayes and I completely enjoy his writing style which is intelligent and cohesive. The characters he creates are interesting, believable and feel like people you would want to know. I’m both glad and sorry to say I’ve lost a lot of sleep finishing his books in the wee hours of the morning.

Fred, a socially awkward accountant, has lived a rather short and boring life. Even after becoming a vampire, he remains unadventurous. All is well and somewhat tedious until Fred makes an impulsive decision (quite out of character for him), and ends up at his high school reunion. There he learns that supernaturals are everywhere and some of them are downright scary.

He reconnects with an old high school friend who is more than she seems and is pulled into the chaotic world of parahumans, which includes quirky zombies, were-ponies, necromancers, dragons, and more. The story follows the relationship between Fred and the sexy and dangerous Krystal. Along the way we meet a host of other fascinating and funny characters. It turns out, even vampires have to make a living! Now, as an undead accountant, Fred must navigate this wild and dangerous world while trying to survive, as life continues to be a bloody mess even after death.

Fred the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes, books 1-8

What I love about Fred the Vampire Accountant:

  • The characters are interesting and varied. Everyone wants an exciting plot line but when each character is chiseled, overpowered and headline worthy, it leaves the story feeling inauthentic. I personally like an exciting story that I can also believe. This is where Fred shines! He balances out the danger and explosiveness of the story with a grounding normalcy. Ironically the excitement is even bigger when paired with a very ordinary vampire accountant.

What I didn’t love about it:

  • The series was a little long for my taste.

Spice level of Drew Hayes:

  • This is an adventurous novel with romance included. I like the way the relationship between Fred and Krystal progresses in a natural way. The spice level is very tame.

Language:

  • The language is mild, nothing that felt objectionable or inappropriate to the scenes. I really enjoyed the narrative and when you can hear the characters thinking. He uses language that feels normal and believable but it still fun. More than once I got strange looks from my family as I chuckled into my phone!

Level of Violence:

  • There is adventure and excitement but nothing at all over the top or gory. Drew Hayes does a good job of being descriptive while still letting your imagination do some of the work.

Book/ Series Length:

  • There are eight books in this series with the ninth currently being written. The books are on the shorter side, less than 200 pages. I found myself losing interest in the later books but that says more about my attention span than the quality of writing. I find that by about book six I become bored and need to switch. If you’re like me and don’t care for protracted series, I would still heartily recommend this author. The story is still very satisfying if you were to stop after book 6!

Where to get Fred the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes:

  • At the time I’m writing this review, the series is available on Kindle. The first four books can be bought but the last four are free on Kindle Unlimited. The series is also available on Audible.

I hope you enjoy this fun and engaging series! Keep reading! -Eva
