College is a killer: A review of the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes

The Super Powereds series includes the following books: Super Powereds: Year One, Super Powereds: Year Two, Super Powereds: Year Three, Super Powereds: Year Four, Corpies

The Fantastic Five…

Meet Nick, Herschel, Vince, Alice, and Mary- new to Lander University and new to being Supers. After having their faulty powers harnessed and repaired, these five have to learn how to control and succeed in a world never meant for them.

Drew Hayes is one of my very favorite male authors! He’s funny, insightful and a seriously good writer. Although there are five main characters (OK six, but I don’t want to give anything away), you get to completely know all of them. They’re each so different and yet so important and thoroughly explained. Each book explores more of their background and motivations while presenting the group with new, life-threatening challenges ahead.

One thing this author does particularly well is to present a supernatural experience in terms of our normal world and what that might look like. For instance, there is a lot of understandable prejudice against Powereds, which is the classification these youth used to fall into. People were afraid of their lack of control and the accidental damage that could be done. So of course there is real fear among the group of their secret getting out- as they are each familiar with the repercussions of being “Powereds”.

Extremely well thought out plot and terrifically written, this is a series you won’t want to miss!

Life at Lander University isn’t what it seems…

At Lander University, knowledge is held in the highest regard. Although the institution offers a wide array of courses for most students, it also boasts a prestigious and exclusive Hero Certification Program—a curriculum designed to transform individuals with superhuman abilities, known as Supers, into fully licensed Heroes.

But a secret pilot program has just begun and now five students stand out, harboring a secret beyond their extraordinary abilities. Unlike their peers, they are former Powereds—individuals with abilities they cannot control, often treated as burdens or second-class citizens. This places the brand new Supers under immense pressure as they navigate their education at Lander. With teamwork as the central focus, they must rely on one another or fail.

As university life continues, their Hero training intensifies. New courses challenge their intellect, physical prowess, and determination, testing their limits in unexpected ways. Amid secrets unraveling and super-powered conflicts escalating, the stakes rise as the students push forward,  sharpening their skills and working toward becoming Heroes amidst increasing pressure. Though still new to their emerging powers, they aim to be among the ten graduates who earn the coveted Hero title.

But a mysterious enemy targets Heroes, growing ever more formidable, old Supers must prove they still have what it takes and new hopefuls must decide what they are made of.

Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes

What I love about the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes:

This series is fast-paced and fun, with interesting and well-written characters and plenty of twists and turns. I love how well you get to know the characters and their motivations and how the choices they make feel logical. There is romance, drama and lots of action.

What I didn’t love about it:

These books are quite long and I have a shorter attention span.

Spice level:

This series is mild. These are college kids and they do engage in physical relationships but it is closed-door and not graphic.

Language:

The language is moderate. There is swearing sporadically throughout, including F-bombs. The language is always appropriate to the scene and the character saying it.

Violence:

The violence in this series is mild. The world it takes place in is dangerous, as there are superheros and super villains, but none of the violence is graphic.

Length:

These books are long! The shortest in the series is over 600 pages and the longest is 1200 pages! It’s a testament to how good they are that I finished.

Where to get the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes:
