A light story for a younger reader…
This was my first time reading the work of Rachel E. Scott and as I read I found myself compiling a list of pros and cons about this series. Much of it comes down to individual preference so you might read this trilogy and feel differently than I do.
First off, the dialogue is fun and snarky with lots of references to current entertainment that a young twenty-something would appreciate. The main character, Caroline, is just that age so it’s perfect. I myself actually got nearly all the references but that might be because I have teens. The story is definitely a romance with action and adventure but it’s not at all steamy or explicit.
I enjoyed the plotline and got to know the supporting characters. I like how different the hero and heroine are and appreciate their complementary personalities. The cover artwork is terrific, the books are a good length. I don’t recall lots of spelling errors and the plot is interesting.
All that being said, I really struggled to get invested in the story. I’ve thought about this a lot and for some reason I just didn’t buy into the characters. I think this would be a fun read for a younger person or maybe someone who wants a pleasant read without the emotional involvement. It’s possible that as I’ve aged and had more experiences, a fun, light read doesn’t hold as much weight for me. Whatever the reason, this series just didn’t keep my interest.
Caroline is on a mission…
Caroline, the unsuspecting yet notorious vigilante of Shifter Haven, has spent years dismantling corruption from the shadows. With her penchant for hair ribbons, skirts, and an impeccable makeup routine, no one would suspect that she’s the mastermind behind a series of high-profile heists. Her mission? To expose the rot within the Shifter Council by delivering incriminating evidence straight to the mayor. One corrupt leader at a time, she’s been cleaning house—until she gets caught.
Enter Morgan Hohlt, the ruthless leader of the Berserkers, a feared faction of bear Shifters. His deadly reputation precedes him, with whispers of a body count well into the double digits. Though Caroline has yet to find proof of his crimes, her recent activities have somehow made life difficult for him. His solution? Kidnap her.
Vengeance is the obvious next step, but when someone starts trying to kill Caroline, priorities shift. Survival takes precedence over pride, forcing her into an uneasy alliance with Morgan. With enemies lurking in every shadow and secrets threatening to unravel, she’s in more danger than ever—especially since she belongs to a Shifter species believed to be extinct.
