Court of Midnight and Deception by K.M. Shea

Fearless leader required! A review of the Court of Midnight and Deception series by K.M. Shea

The Court of Midnight and Deception series includes the following books: Crown of Shadows, Crown of Moonlight, Queen’s Crown

Leila is the ruler we all want!

When Leila is thrust into the role of Night Court ruler, she is too young, too inexperienced and far too easy a target. Some expect to manipulate her, others to simply watch her court fail. But it turns out that what her greedy, grasping court really needs is a girl who’s not quite human and not quite fae!

I love this story of redemption! K.M. Shea weaves a tale of intrigue and also of heartbreak as we see a people so broken and desperate to cover their shortcomings. I love how Leila, by virtue of growing up mostly human, is able to see through the games fae play and save them from themselves. Although these characters are fantasy, they feel real and their actions make sense. This well-written series is one of my very favorites!

All Leila wanted was a chance at something normal…

The fae of the Night Court are in turmoil, scrambling to crown their next monarch before their Court collapses under its own weight. Amid this chaos, their search leads them to an unexpected candidate: Leila, a half-human who wants nothing to do with the fae world.

Determined to leave her fae heritage behind, she’s shocked when nobles arrive at her doorstep, declaring her the new Queen of the Night Court. Thrust unwillingly into a role she never wanted, Leila finds herself ruling over a Court riddled with problems. The treasury is nearly empty, betrayal lurks at every turn, and an assassin seems determined to end her reign before it even begins.

Among the chaos, she meets Rigel, better known as the Wraith—a notorious fae lord and the Court’s most skilled assassin. Bound by the Court’s magic to protect her, the Wraith has no choice but to spare her life, though he makes no effort to hide his disdain. Their sharp exchanges reveal a dynamic that is both tense and captivating.

As if managing the Court’s dysfunction and avoiding assassination weren’t challenging enough, ancient laws dictate that she must marry to secure her position as queen. Desperate to avoid further political strife, she knows she needs a partner who won’t stir the pot. Yet, against all logic, her thoughts keep straying to the enigmatic assassin whose sharp wit and deadly skills make him both a danger and a potential ally.

Navigating a treacherous path filled with power struggles, betrayals, and an unexpected connection, she discovers that becoming queen of the Night Court might be the most dangerous—and life-changing—adventure of all.
