High school meets supernatural: A review of The Magical Being Rehabilitation Center series by K.M. Shea

The Magical Beings Rehabilitation series includes the following books: Vampires Drink Tomato Juice, Goblins Wear Suits, The Lost Files of the Magical Beings Rehabilitation Center

Not your average after school job…

When Morgan accidentally stumbles onto a supernatural secret in her high school, she gets more than she bargained for. Her after school job now involves the paranormal world she had no idea was all around her!

This is an earlier urban fantasy series by author K.M. Shea. It’s fun and quirky characters lend this series a light-hearted feel. The main character is a teenager dealing with high school drama alongside the supernatural. The whole premise keeps the series laid-back and pleasant.

Morgan has several love interests and I really enjoyed watching them play out and seeing who she would end up with. This is so true to teen life! It was also fun to see her evolve and go from youth to adult. The Magical Beings Rehabilitation Center is a fun, light read.

Morgan’s getting more than she bargained for…

Morgan Fae thought high school was complicated enough—until her world turned upside down.

After a bizarre encounter involving a werewolf, a suspiciously pale substitute teacher who might be a vampire, and a thermos of tomato juice, Morgan is whisked away to the Magical Beings’ Rehabilitation Center (MBRC). Hidden in the bustling chaos of Chicago’s Union Station, the MBRC is a top-secret organization dedicated to helping magical creatures blend into human society. Unfortunately, Morgan’s accidental discovery of this hidden world breaks all the rules.

To fix the mess, Morgan is reluctantly roped into a part-time job at the MBRC, where she quickly becomes the human guinea pig for magical beings to study. From private tutoring sessions to acting as a living encyclopedia, Morgan discovers that “average human” is a rare and highly valued resource. Along the way, she befriends a charming, shape-shifting pooka (who’s far too attractive for her peace of mind) and inadvertently kickstarts a cyclops business revolution.

But senior year brings even bigger challenges. Between a goblin mob boss urging her to stay close to Chicago and a flirtatious pooka trying to lure her overseas, Morgan’s college plans are already a tangled mess. To top it all off, a dangerous anti-human magical organization is threatening everything the MBRC stands for—and putting Morgan’s life on the line.

With her future at a crossroads, Morgan must decide: Does she have what it takes to stay in this world of magic, danger, and chaos—or will she walk away for good?

This series is a fast-paced and light-hearted read that entertains and engages. It’s clean, sweet romance and fun supporting characters are a treat.

What I didn’t love about it:

This is one of K.M. Shea’s earlier series and you can see how she’s grown as a writer. While this series is fun and cohesive, her more recent writing is even better.

Spice Level:

This series is completely mild and sweet. There are several potential romantic interests as the heroine is growing up. I love the one she ends up with!

Language:

The language is mild. There are no swear words or objectionable language.

Violence:

This series is very mild in terms of violence. I would let my younger kiddos read the books.

Length:

There are three books in this series. The first two novels are 300 plus pages long, short to medium length. The last book is really a novella at 90 pages.
