How to Train Your Demon! A review of The Guild Codex: Demonized series by Annette Marie

The Guild Codex: Demonized series includes the following books: Taming Demons for Beginners, Slaying Monsters for the Feeble, Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped, Delivering Evil for Experts

How do you tame a demon?

To save her own life, Robin finds herself in possession of a demon contract- the bargain that forces unwilling demons to become subject to a human’s wishes. And while a contracted demon is safer than a free demon, her life is in constant peril. As Zylas the demon and Robin begin to trust each other, they learn they are stronger together than apart, which is fortunate as forces combine to destroy them.

This is a fast-paced and exciting series with plenty of unconventional romance (I mean- Zylas is a demon!) and adventure. The writing is very good and the characters are interesting.

One thing Annette Marie does very well in this series is to make the main characters unusual. Robin is bookish, reserved and not your typical long-flowing-hair heroine. Zylas is a straight-up demon- claws and all! It wasn’t long before I was rooting for this unlikely pair.

I have to add a disclaimer here…I typically only review clean (not spicy) fantasy novels, as those are the kind I most enjoy. This series starts out very mild and gets quite spicy by the end. By the last book, I was skipping through some explicit scenes so I could finish the story. I really enjoyed the adventure and the developing relationship and if the romance was milder I would read more of this author’s books. So in short- it’s really a great series but definitely spicy at the end!

Robin is changing more than her address…

When Robin arrives at her uncle’s house, she expects life in his house to be similar to the one she’d led. But unlike her parents—outcast sorcerers who avoided practicing magic, uncle has a very different view of sorcery.

He has chosen a far darker path, summoning creatures of darkness, binding them into service contracts, and selling them to the highest bidder. It is an illegal and dangerous practice that Robin is expected to ignore.

All she has to do is stay out of it—pretend not to see the summoning circle in the basement, not to notice the shadowy being trapped within it, and not to break the rules. But when her life is on the line, rules get broken. Despite a lifelong avoidance of magic, Robin becomes responsible for a demon more powerful than the strongest mage or sorcerer.

She’s always been taught that demons are evil. But Robin begins to see that while cold and ruthless, her demon Zylas also protects her without fail. Beneath his hostility, she begins to wonder if there is a heart hidden away.

Together, they must find a way to return Zylas to his world before their secret is discovered. Forced into hiding by the ambitious and greedy and orphaned by those seeking power. As the cost of corruption becomes clear, Robin and Zylas face the overwhelming task of cleaning up real evil.

The Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie

What I love about the Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie:

This series is well written and fast paced. I absolutely love the quirky characters and the very unique story premise. Annette Marie does a great job of creating a supernatural world that you can believe is real. The character and plot development are excellent and keep you on your toes.

What I didn’t love about it:

As mentioned above, this series starts clean and ends quite spicy. I prefer a less explicit romance.

Spice level:

The first two books are spice-free. The third book has some mild spice near the end. The fourth book is definitely spicy.

Language:

The language is very tame. Throughout the whole series there are only a few mild swear words and they are always appropriate to the scene.

Violence:

This series is what I would call a medium level of violence. It’s not completely tame but neither does it keep me up at night.

Length:

There are four books in this series. These novels are medium length, between 350 and 400 pages long.

Where to get the Guild Codex: Demonized by Annette Marie:

At the time I’m writing this review, the series is available on Kindle. The books can be bought on kindle or are free with your Kindle Unlimited subscription. The series is also available in paperback form and on audible.

Spicy and unique- I hope you enjoy this series! Keep reading! -Eva
