A World of Angels and Demons that I can’t get enough of!
Sometimes you want to relax with a fluffy book that requires no thought and little investment. You already know how it will end and don’t necessarily want to get super engaged or be unable to put the book down. If so- this is not the series for you! Realms Unleashed is my favorite series by author Isa Medina. It’s well-written, exciting and has a fantastic slow-burn love story.
From almost the first page, I found myself drawn to Ana, the unlucky and overpowered young woman who finds herself constantly keeping her powers in check in order to maintain her cover as an unimportant player in the supernatural world. She’s careful and smart and so well written it feels like reading about a (very powerful) friend.
I also love Zel. When we meet him, he’s such a jerk! But as the story progresses you get to know the bossy angel and understand why he does what he does. One of my favorite book endings ever is the last two sentences of book one. I don’t want to give it away but hopefully you give the series a try and see if you don’t agree!
This series takes place in our world but with a twist. Turns out, our world is the middle realm that holds the Earth (demon realm- not the actual earth) and Air (angel realm) together. Creatures from either side occasionally enter our world and the peace is kept primarily by the Hunters- an elite policing organization. Non-magical humans are largely unaware of the existence of Angels and Demons and the precarious position the world holds between their two realms.
I love the way this reality is introduced to the reader. It feels natural and simple, not complicated or forced. I find that I often don’t have the patience to invest long chapters in understanding the world where the story takes place. Isa Medina does a good job of jumping right into the story and organically helping you understand the world you’ve entered.
This series is smartly written. The characters seem real and do things that make sense and feel authentic. I love a happy ending but it’s fun when you can’t guess every twist and turn and this series kept me on my toes. Fun, engaging and somewhat gritty- I loved escaping to the Red Angel world!
Meet Ana: a powerful supernatural hiding in plain sight
Ana hunts paranormal pests for a living. It’s not glamorous, but it pays the bills—and keeps her out of the spotlight. That’s crucial because Ana has a dangerous secret: she’s the reincarnation of an ancient being with the power to end immortal lives. If the wrong people find out, she’ll become the hunted instead of the hunter.
When whispers of her true nature start spreading, Ana scrambles to fly further under the radar and keep her power contained. But in a world where demons, angels, and Hunters play by their own ruthless rules, her desire to remain hidden is trumped by the desperate need for allies.
Enter Zel, a maddeningly arrogant (and undeniably gorgeous) angel with a knack for getting under her skin. He offers her a deal: help him find a rare magical weapon, and he’ll make sure her secret stays buried. It sounds simple but like everything else in Ana’s life, it’s not.
As she dives deeper into the job, Ana finds herself facing betrayals, black-market mayhem, and a growing urge to strangle Zel. But staying under the radar is no longer her only challenge. The closer they get to their goal, the closer Ana comes to unearthing truths about herself that even she isn’t ready to face.
Survival is one thing, but keeping her heart out of the mix? That might be the hardest mission yet.
What I love about Realms Unleashed: Red Angel Series:
The story is well thought-out and executed. The narrative is interesting and fast-paced. I particularly love that Angels aren’t inherently good and Demons aren’t necessarily bad in this story. Also- the characters are flawed and messy but grow and become better versions of themselves. Plus, it’s so fun when you watch the main character struggle and even fail but in the end- basically save the world!
What I didn’t love about it:
Sometimes the story got a little dark for my taste. This is the perfect series to read after you’ve finished a fluff novel and are wanting a story with bite.
Spice level:
The spice level was tame- nothing beyond kissing. This book definitely has romance and you know there’s physical attraction but nothing at all graphic.
Language:
The language is a bit edgy. There is mild cursing throughout the series but no F-bombs and the language always felt appropriate to the scene.
Violence:
This series is somewhat intense and a bit higher on the violence scale than what I typically read. Some of the scenes are a bit disturbing. I will say that I tend to have a low tolerance to violence so it might be no big deal to you.
Length:
There are four books in this series. These novels are on the shorter side, about 250 pages each- perfect for those of us with a short attention span!
