Escape to the Innkeeper Chronicles where nothing is as it seems!
The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews are a book series that exemplifies good clean urban fantasy! This husband and wife writing team are one of my favorites and they excel at telling a story that is both interesting and believable. Or at the very least, you believe the characters would act the way they do. I particularly love the way Dina is written. Let’s be honest- sometimes it’s fun to read about a perfectly shallow heroine and the big strong man who saves her. But most of the time I enjoy reading about those who have some depth.
I love that Dina takes her responsibilities seriously yet still has very human emotions and struggles. The characters who surround her are similarly multi-dimensional and interesting. (I particularly love Caldenia- the snarky older woman who lives at the inn).
Dina runs a tight ship!
Dina Demille appears to lead a perfectly normal life as the owner of a quaint Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town. However, Dina is far from ordinary. She runs a magical Inn that caters to otherworldly guests, and her broom is a deadly weapon. The Inn itself is alive and has a mind of its own, and Dina’s only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who’s hiding from a murderous past.
When a mysterious creature begins hunting in the town, Dina feels compelled to protect her neighbors. This puts her in the middle of two very different men: the annoyingly attractive, ex-military werewolf, Sean Evans, and the charismatic cosmic vampire soldier, Arland. As she battles deadly creatures, Dina finds herself facing an enemy more vicious and intelligent than she’s ever encountered—one that may cost her everything if she’s not careful.
What I love about the Innkeeper Chronicles:
The main characters are just fantastic. There are two love interests and at different times I found myself rooting for different men to win Dina’s attention. The story takes place mainly in our world but you also get to experience other worlds as our heroine’s journey takes her to other worlds as well. Sometimes when authors world-build, the reading feels exhausting as every detail seems to need to be explained. Not so for Ilona Andrew’s work. You are effortlessly transported and brought back. Again, I also really love the depth and development of the characters.
What I didn’t love about it:
I can’t really think of any critiques. This was a well thought-out and executed series.
Spice level:
This is a romance as well as an adventure and the spice level is definitely on the milder side. It’s not as tame as K.M. Shea but still totally acceptable in my opinion.
Language:
The language is mild, nothing that felt objectionable or inappropriate to the scenes.
Violence:
There’s enough violence to lend the story some teeth and keep the reader feeling engaged but it never went beyond my comfort level (which is admittedly low).
Length:
There are six books in this series, and each one is around 250 pages. I find that I have a short attention span so books this length are perfect for me! I usually get bored after book three or four but because these are on the shorter side, there’s plenty of story without loss of interest.
Where to get it the Innkeeper Chronicles:
At the time I’m writing this review, the whole series by is available on Kindle. The first book is free on Kindle Unlimited and the other five are not too expensive at less than $7 each. They are also available on Audible.
I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did! Keep reading! -Eva
